What's the best age to start martial arts?
From toddler classes to adult beginners: what each age gets out of training, and how to tell if your child is ready.
Short answer: earlier than most people think, and it's never too late
Many schools run classes from around age 3, some from 18 months with a parent. At the other end, plenty of adults start in their 40s, 50s and beyond. The right age depends far more on the class than on the number.
Toddlers and preschool, about 18 months to 5
These classes are play-based: listening, balance, coordination, taking turns. Expect short classes, lots of games and very little real technique. Look for small groups and coaches who are comfortable with little kids.
Kids, about 6 to 12
This is when real technique takes over. Kids can follow multi-step instructions, practise with a partner and work toward belts. Many schools split this range into two groups, such as 6 to 8 and 9 to 12.
Teens
Teens often train in a dedicated class or join adults. It's a great age for confidence, fitness and a healthy group to belong to. Ask whether teens are paired with adults and how that's supervised.
Adults
Adult beginners are normal at almost every school. Look for a fundamentals class, coaches who scale intensity, and a culture where experienced students help newcomers.
How to tell if your child is ready
Can they follow a simple instruction for a few minutes? Are they OK being in a group without you right next to them? If yes, a trial class will tell you the rest.
